FHS Students Share Their Farming Expertise For Ag Heritage Day Frankenmuth is known for its rich farming and agri-business initiatives. Not only is this a high interest topic among our students, but agriculture also provides diverse future career opportunities. At one time, our local farming students would celebrate their heritage with "drive your tractor to school day." Students, staff and our community would often pepper the drivers with questions about their role on the farms. In 2010, the students came together in a committee to formally share their agricultural expertise during their first "Ag Heritage Day." This year, eight Frankenmuth High School students with a "can do" attitude set their sights on letting our students, teachers and community learn more about how our food and fiber are produced and processed. These students conducted several planning meetings to structure the event with the theme of "soybeans." According the committee co-chairs, Luke Scharrer and William Keinath, the event focused on the importance of agriculture to our local society and nation's future along with the many employment opportunities that it provides. They spent hours preparing their display areas and were adept at sharing their knowledge with each visitor to their station. This year they showcased a tiling machine, planting equipment and harvest machines. Students and staff learned the importance of plant food and protection, as well as the abundance of products made from soybeans. Local agribusinesses such as Dennis Roy Agency, Farm Bureau Insurance; Weiss Farm Equipment, Inc.; Star of the West Milling Company (Keith Martus); and Saginaw County Farm Bureau annually offer their support to our students. Teresa Crook guides the planning committee each year as they prepare for the big day. Ag Heritage Day has become a must-see annual tradition at FSD. What began as a showcase of tractors in the parking lot has become an educational experience for everyone in the district. Thank you to all who are involved in putting on this fun event; we look forward to next year.
