18 A Community Event: Trek 4 Tech Plans are underway for the 5th Annual Trek 4 Tech 5K Run/ Walk on Sunday, September 23rd, 2018. The event started in 2014 under the name "iRun" with the following mission: A fundraising opportunity that will promote technology and healthy lifestyles with our local families. Participants will enjoy a beautiful run through the streets of Frankenmuth. Frankenmuth School District employees Kristen Hecht, Adele Martin, and Jill Waliczek, along with parent volunteer Karalee Masker, spearheaded the inaugural event. Although the purpose of the event did not change last year, the name did to "Trek 4 Tech" with the intention of encouraging not only runners, but walkers, to participate in the event. Parent volunteer Jason Swackhammer joined the event organization team last year. Through his marketing expertise, online registration was added along with a sponsorship grid leading to an increase in event participants and sponsorships from local businesses and families. In 2017, nearly 170 people participated in the 5K run/ walk event which is officially documented by Miller Race Management. With event sponsors, we raised just over $5000 for technology purchases at List Elementary and E.F. Rittmueller Middle School! Sponsorship dollars have helped List Elementary fund blended learning computer and tablet programs such as News-O-Matic, RAZ Kids Reading, Reflex Math, Spelling City and more. At E.F. Rittmueller Middle School, we were able to purchase an entire class set of Chromebooks! We appreciate the support from our local businesses who sponsored the event last year: Frankenmuth Credit Union, Frankenmuth Insurance, Grasel Graphics, The Pursuit, Schaefer & Bierlein, 7-Eleven, Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland, Coleen Hetzner from Century 21, E & J Entertainment, Prost! Wine Bar & Charcuterie, The Frankenmuth News, Kroger, JMW Real Estate, T-Dub's Pizzeria & Pub, Subway of Frankenmuth, The Style Shoppe, Tim Hortons, Amazing Engraving, Bavarian Inn Restaurant, Dr. Daryle Mahnke - DDS, Frankenmuth Riverboat Tours Bavarian Belle and Weiss Equipment. Sponsorship letters were recently mailed to local businesses and committee members have been pounding the pavement asking business to post an event flyer and/or help sponsor the event. Please contact either Kristen Hecht at khecht@fmuthschools.com or Jill Waliczek at jwaliczek@ fmuthschools.com if you are interested in sponsoring/ donating to the event. Over forty List and EFR staff and family members volunteer the day of the race so the event runs smoothly. The event would not be possible without support from the City of Frankenmuth, Frankenmuth Police Department and the Frankenmuth Fire Department. We also appreciate the support of the Kindy and Valasek families for allowing aid/ water stations at their residence. This truly has becoming a community event and we thank you for your support! Please join us on Sunday, September 23rd at 2:00pm, whether it be participating in the event or to cheer on the run/walkers if they pass by your residence. The atmosphere is terrific with a DJ provided by E & J Entertainment, food at the finish line, costume contest, corn hole and awards! Get up, get active and help us raise funds for technology!
