From the Desk of the Superintendent, Adele Martin Welcome back to school! You may have noticed that we have been busy both inside and outside the campus this summer. Our "To Do List" addressed a new roof, flooring at List Elementary, gym improvements, EFR band room updates, and track/tennis court surfaces. However, the project that was difficult to miss were the parking lots around the schools. I'm grateful for everyone's patience as navigation on the property was challenging in July. As a result, we won't need to touch these lots for many years. Whew! So, how do we fund these projects? In 1965, the voters in the Frankenmuth School District supported a millage for a Sinking Fund. Sinking Fund dollars can only be spent on specific improvements to our facilities. They cannot pay for salaries or instructional materials or other general fund expenditures. The projects are not randomly chosen. Instead, a specific list has been made with priorities given to the infrastructure needs of our campus. Occasionally, items "move up" on our list should an area become more critical. We are grateful for the support of our community to make these projects happen. One area that takes precedence when considering upcoming projects and needs is school security. Students who do not feel safe at school cannot learn at school, so providing an inviting and secure educational environment continues to be top priority. In order to ensure the safest educational environment, we set aside sinking fund resources for security improvements, provide continual professional development in school safety and response for every school district employee, and work with experts in the field to learn the latest protocols and procedures. Although we hope to never need to use it, training in these topics occurs regularly to ensure the most current processes are being utilized, and we are grateful for the FSD's partnership with Chief Mawer from the Frankenmuth Police Department and Tom Mynsberge from Critical Incident Management who help us be prepared for emergent response to unexpected events. This spring, FHS was recognized by US News and World Report as the 7th Best High School in the state of Michigan and in the top 500 in the nation. Acknowledgement for our students' exceptional academic efforts would not be possible without the dedication of our teachers and instructional staff, support of our transportation, food service, custodial, office and administrative members. Parents, volunteers, and community organizations play a crucial role in this process. On September 4, we will welcome approximately 1300 students into our buildings where they will learn, laugh, and grow. Thank you for being supportive of our students!
