The district partnered with Energy Education, a company with a history of assisting schools and commercial businesses, to reduce utility consumption without capital investment in equipment or process controls. High School teacher Rob Baker has led the charge in this program. As their name suggests, this process involved educating district staff in energy conservation procedures and auditing the buildings several times each week to identify and correct discrepancies. This auditing process has continued and remains an integral component of the program's continued success. The procedures are simple for teachers; closing blinds each evening, shutting down computers, turning out lights when leaving the room, and keeping classroom doors closed to save on heating/cooling costs. During vacations and long holiday weekends, staff members are reminded by Mr. Baker to help with the district's efforts to conserve energy and all equipment is turned off completely. Additionally, Mr. Baker works closely with our maintenance staff so that HVAC controllers are set to only heat and cool buildings when occupied, and coast during non-occupied hours. Coasting is the process of allowing the building to cool down until a threshold temperature is reached. All repairs and upgrades to the buildings are made keeping our energy plan in mind. In approximately 2016, the district started replacing fluorescent lighting to LED lighting, which operate more cost effectively. Due to the age of our buildings, upgrades to HVAC control systems are being made during summer building improvement plans. Finally, our energy conservation program has been independently audited and List Elementary, Rittmueller Middle School and Frankenmuth High School have received the Energy Star rating every time we applied. Specifically, recognition has been received in 2009, 2010 and 2018. Credit for these honors belongs to Mr. Baker and his diligent record keeping, careful attention to building systems, and belief that all staff members can support the efforts of energy conservation. Besides honors from United States Environmental Protection Agency and US Department of Energy, the Frankenmuth School District has realized actual savings. From 2006 through July 2018, the Frankenmuth School District has saved $974,406 in energy costs. This translates to additional funds being available for students. www.BarkmanLandscaping.com T I M B R I S TO L Landscape Designer (810) 652-6588 • (888) 884-0988 tim@barkmanlandscaping.com "Referrals are our Business!" $2,715,182 $974,406 Simple Practices Equate to Big Savings 17
