12 The end of the year not only serves to wrap up loose ends, but also provides for the important bridge as students transition to a new building. Our kindergartners, 4th graders, and 8th grades have a chance to visit their new school before the year ends. It is during this time that they meet staff members, see classrooms, ask questions, and understand expectations. This opportunity alleviates much of their anxiety over the summer. At the beginning of the "Stay Home, Stay Safe" time, Ms. Emily Spaulding asked her 5th grade students to write letters to their "first day of 5th grade selves." She understood that making the leap from the elementary to middle school could be a bit scary and decided to share their advice with her 2020 - 2021 students. Take Our Advice... "How I got over the locker combination was I bought a lock and practiced it over su er break." – Sean McGovern " W e need to talk about locker space. The space in your lockers is very small and some people learn that the hard way. Your lockers will be very skinny and narrow, which means you should only have a normal sized backpack with only the essentials in it. You can decorate your lockers but you can't get too much to decorate them with because you don't need it." – Chloe Kusowski "I want to tell my past-self that no matter how hard things get. No matter how hard you want to give up, do not give up because, the harder you try the bigger reward you will get out of it. Life is difficult in many moments, you just want to give up and set your pencil down and go home. But, you have to keep trying because if you don't try you won't make it anywhere and the more you try and the more you'll recognize that you will become the person you've always wanted to be. You will learn and grow in many ways in this school that is just amazing." -Payton Holzhei "On your first day of 5th grade don't be worried about being late for class. If you have trouble with your locker, the teachers will understand and help you open it. You will find that you will become good at opening your locker and it was not that hard after all. This year you may see that you will find new friends and maybe even a new best friend. It's interesting how one lunch period can lead to finding your new best friend. This is when I learned that one special friend can make you feel better about yourself." -Ana Harris "These are some of the fun and extra things outside of school work. Dare Class with Officer Smith, Hartley Nature Center overnight field trip, two school dances and Fox Club. Tuesday will be your favorite day! EFR library has a slushy and a hot drink machine. Even though I was nervous at the beginning of the school year, it ended up being my favorite! Even though I lost three months of the school year it was still the best year yet." -Wyatt Mitin Messages from EFR's 5th Graders to List Elementary's 4th Graders 465 N.
