FSD students officially wrapped
up their year on Friday, June 12.
Like most summer breaks,
the following Monday
marked the beginning
of "workouts." However,
the ability to gather as
a team is being met
with much gratitude
as March was the last
time that any of our
players were allowed
to be together. During
the interim, coaches
relied on Zoom (an
online video-conferencing
platform) to facilitate workouts
and convey information. Students
practiced on their own or with their
families instead of their peers. Therefore, the announcement
of summer training was exciting news for all.
Returning to athletics required much planning and
education. Athletic Director Kevin Schwedler and FHS
trainer Julie Felten began planning in the spring knowing
that our athletes and coaches would be anxious to safely
begin. Using the Michigan High School Athletic Association's
guidelines (found on the MHSAA website) they educated all
coaches on how to safely provide for student participation in
summer activities.
Mr. Schwedler said, "This is a very fluid situation, and we
fully expect to implement more changes throughout the
summer. Our coaches are prepared for these modifications.
Students will need to not only shake off the cobwebs, but
also condition and begin to implement skill development.
Health and safety is very important so we will take all of the
recommended steps seriously."
Although this return will seem odd compared to our previous
years, we are excited to have the athletes back on campus,
and look forward to the expanding the scope of the practices.
