T he local Frankenmuth Rotary organizations have always been supportive of the Frankenmuth School District's efforts. Both the Noon and Morning Rotary groups reached out to the Frankenmuth Schools this summer to ask how they could assist. List Elementary principal Dr. Jill Waliczek was thankful for the literacy grant written by Mary Guzak. With the monies from this grant, Dr. Waliczek was able to fund her summer reading program. Over 40 students received books in the mail each week for six weeks. Not only did the Rotarians support the purchases, they also spent an afternoon preparing the envelopes for their special destinations. After listening to school administrators outline the Return to Learn plan, Morning Rotary member Matt Hotchkiss was motivated to offer his help. He learned that the schools wanted to provide some standing plexiglass barriers for staff members so they could move around the room and get closer to students. Superintendent, Adele Martin expressed her frustration with not only the cost of the products, but also the amount of time that they took for delivery. Matt thought that he could help. With plans in hand, he gathered the materials, organized volunteers, and utilized True Value's workspace to build 15 rolling plexiglass stands for our schools. School supply shopping is often one of the highlights to going back to the classroom in the fall. Morning Rotary members recognize that not every family is able to purchase these items, and each year they hold a supply drive that fills brand-new backpacks with all the necessary items to start the year. The backpacks are shared with List Elementary and E.F. Rittmueller Middle School. This year FHS principal JoLynn Clark and EFR principal Kristen Hecht asked if the Rotarians would provide pencils cases filled with supplies instead. With new safety rules in place, students would no longer be able to share supplies such as scissors, colored pencils, and such. Both principals requested these cases to give to students who would need these essential supplies. Morning and Noon Rotarians not only made the purchases for our students, they also filled the bags so they were ready to go for the first day of school! Morning Rotarians Larry Michael, Matt Hotchkiss, and Steve Reider built 15 plexiglass stands for the FSD. Chip and Deb Sassone, Mayor Mary Anne Ackerman, Kurt Hadaway, and Mary Guzak from Noon Rotary help principal Jill Waliczek with the summer reading program. Mayor Mary Anne Ackerman and Mary Guzak stuff envelopes. ROTARY IN ACTION 16
