18 FHS Athletics Bottle and Can Drive a Huge Success One person's trash is another's treasure. While families were at home and grocery store's recycling stations were closed, our Athletic Department saw an opportunity. With the help of a donated dumpster from Great Lakes Region Disposal, the Frankenmuth Athletic Department accepted bags of bottles and cans with the hopes that all proceeds from the donations would supplement the FHS Athletic Training budget. Our community responded to the call! The dumpster quickly filled up each day for a duration of 10 days leaving a large pile, the size of a school bus, of returnable cans in the FSD bus garage lot. We were quite thankful when our local grocery stores were able to accept returns in early June. Athletic Trainer Julie Felten with the help of coaches, bus drivers, kitchen staff and student athletes, took back the cans. This process was rather slow as we were only allowed only $25 per return. Finally, on September 8th, the last bag was returned! We were able to raise $5,709 for our athletic training budget which directly affects all student athletes at Frankenmuth High School. We would like to thank the Frankenmuth community for their support! Outdoor Classroom Earlier this fall, a project of opportunity was accomplished through the creation of a natural rock mini-amphitheater in Memorial Park. Frankenmuth Parks & Recreation identified a need for alternative locations for indoor activities and matched that with an underutilized area of Memorial Park. With funding assistance from the Frankenmuth Community Foundation, this vision became a reality. This new area is tucked into the rolling hills of Memorial Park, with a babbling creek running nearby. The newly constructed facility comes at an ideal time with concerns over COVID-19. It will serve as an outdoor classroom for school children to get a break from their traditional indoor setting. This will provide them with the chance to get outside in the fresh air and sunshine during their school day. Outside of school hours, it can also be used by the public for evening meetings, small outdoor wedding ceremonies, and several other types of events. Interested individuals should contact Frankenmuth Parks & Recreation for scheduling information.
