"CAMP SUMMER SUCCESS" has been a huge SUCCESS I n response to COVID school shutdowns, Frankenmuth School District offered CAMP SUMMER SUCCESS to help make sure our students were on pace to begin the 2021-2022 school year. Program was directed by Mrs. Tosha Miller, a 2nd grade teacher at List Elementary and Mrs. Liz Merrihew, a 3rd grade teacher at List Elementary. Six sections were offered to students who were moving into grades 1st-6th this fall. Interest from families was high and all sections were filled to capacity with a waiting list as well. We had approximately eighty students participate in the program. Teachers for the program were Mrs. Madison Struble teaching incoming 1st and 6th graders, Ms. Madalyn McKenzie teaching incoming 2nd graders, Mrs. Tosha Miller teaching incoming 3rd graders, Mrs. Liz Merrihew teaching incoming 4th graders, and Mrs. Amanda Reisig teaching incoming 5th graders. The camp ran for eight weeks on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Students received reading workshop, writing workshop, phonics instruction, math instruction as well as a daily STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) hands-on activity. All instruction was new content and planned to help students rise into the next grade as well as make it fun and exciting. We created a camp-like atmosphere with a different theme each week. With the generous donation from the Frankenmuth Noon Rotary we were able to send students home every single week with two new books for them to keep. The students were able to "shop" for their books every Thursday and it was something they really looked forward to. The feedback from the students, parents and community has been overwhelmingly positive. Students were engaged and excited to be there and parents were constantly reaching out letting us know how happy they were with the program. To quote one student: "I thought "summer school was going to be boring-but I really love being here. It's a lot of fun".
