What happens when a necessary (but dreary) construction wallboard meets a creative teacher and an energetic class? It's amazing, eye-catching art for all to enjoy every day! When construction of the new media center/library began at E.F. Rittmueller Middle School in September, the doors to the construction area were boarded up for safety, with dark gray wallboard… This inspired EFR's new Art & Design Teacher, Rochelle Snow. Ms. Snow introduced her 7th & 8th Grade Explore Design Classes to the process of mural making and advertising. "When creating the new design classes, I wanted students to have an opportunity to have a feel for and learn about real world opportunities. Students collaborate with each other and get to try their hands at different design jobs which encourages them to think about opportunities for their future" – Ms. Snow. The classes started the project by breaking apart the characteristics that they saw as successful in a typical advertisement that they would see on the side of the road. They then decided how their "Frankenmuth Mural" could be eye-catching, successful, and incorporate their favorite details of the Frankenmuth School District. Together, students came up with their overall design, color palette, scale, imagery, and typography. After many drawings, critiques, and conversations between the two classes, they began production. The collaboration has produced a one of a kind mural that speaks not only of the value of the school to the students, but how important the community is to the students. The mural depicts an eagle fl ying in front of the words "Frankenmuth Eagles" with "rips" made by eagle talons. Shown in these rips are things that students cherish about their school district: different educational opportunities, extracurricular activities, furry friends Frank and Shaefer, a multitude of sports, the three schools that make up the district (List, EFR, and FHS), and the community of Frankenmuth. Students are excited to share their addition to the middle school and are proud of their collaborative efforts to make such an inviting piece of artwork. Next time you take a walk down the hallways of E.F. Rittmueller, be sure to take a look at this wonderful mural. Go Eagles! A Mural That Speaks A Million 22
