Expanding B Y J O L Y N N C L A R K 16 through Partnerships Frankenmuth High School is proud to partner with a number of exceptional institutions and programs to offer students a wide variety of educational opportunities. For a school this size (536 students), it's hard to imagine that students have more than 100 elective options and are currently enrolled in 25 on-site electives (including six Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs), more than 25 online elective courses, more than 20 Dual Enrollment courses, 22 off-site Career and Technical Education programs, and early college. These elective courses and programs not only allow students to explore their specific career-related interests, but many of these courses and programs also allow students to earn college credit, certifications and licensures, and on-the-job work experience that is often accompanied by a paycheck. Let's explore a few of the many electives FHS students are currently taking. Although college may not be the path of choice for every student, college tuition continues to rise, so helping students who plan to attend a two or four-year college or university eliminate some of those costs by earning college credit during high school, which is a great benefit to students and families. Students can earn college credits through Advanced Placement (AP) Courses, Dual Enrollment, and articulated credits in CTE programs. For the 2022-23 school year, FHS is offering eight AP classes on site and another seven through Michigan Virtual's online platform. With a consistent 75-80% pass rate on the AP exams in the spring, FHS students have traditionally amassed hundreds of cumulative credits each year through Advanced Placement. College credits can also be earned through Dual Enrollment where a student takes an elected class directly with an area college or university. For the first semester alone, FHS has 37 students who are dual enrolled in 144 credits. Recent graduates have even reported entering college as sophomores based on their credit earning during high school. Students interested in even more credit-earning potential can elect to participate in Great Lakes Bay Early College, where students can earn up to 60 college credits while simultaneously earning their high school diploma. We are fortunate to not only be geographically well-positioned to work with three Career Centers, but to also have our own Career and Technical Education programs to offer on site at FHS. This plethora of offerings has drawn over 200 FHS students to elect CTE course options this fall. Students have work-based learning opportunities through Co-Op, Internships, and Cadet (Teacher Cadet and Police Cadet) programs offered through FHS, as well as a number of placement opportunities with their CTE programs. Each program provides a variety of benefits including hands-on training, certification and licensure options, as well as articulated and direct college credit. Opportunities
