16 The City of Frankenmuth is proud to have more than 110 acres of parkland – which is nearly 1,000 square feet per resident. Most communities our size have somewhere between 25 and 50 acres of park land. The City boosts twice that much. While the City has a long and vibrant history in regards to Parks and Recreation, there were some small but substantial things accomplished during the past two years – because, and in spite of, Covid 19. During the early phases of the pandemic, many communities were closing their park bathrooms, removing trash cans and benches. Parks staff at the City made a conscious effort to do the opposite. Knowing our residents and stakeholders, we knew that our parks were going to see more use than normal. We committed to more cleaning than normal and kept our facilities open. We capitalized on opportunities. With the gracious support of the Frankenmuth Community Foundation we were able to construct an outdoor classroom near List Elementary in Memorial Park. We received a grant from MIOSHA to fund $15,000 of ventilation improvements in park bathrooms. In the winter, we found new ways to connect with residents with our "Drive Thru Santa" event and cardboard sled racing. We also finalized our 5 year Parks and Recreation Plan in 2021. As part of the planning process we conducted a survey of residents and we are listening. We heard that residents want more and varied programming, not just organized sports. We also heard that we could do a better job of communicating our parks and programming opportunities. And you also told us that trails, pathways and biking are important and that you want us to pursue more of those opportunities.
