4 Heritage Park Riverwalk - $ 1 M I L L I O N E X T E N S I O N - Fun Facts • The riverwalk was initially 7-ft wide but when it was remodeled in 2015, the smallest modern pavement machines could pave was 8-ft wide. • The riverwalk totals 0.9 miles (4752 ft long). This extension will add 1,020 ft or roughly 1.2 miles in total. • The walkway extension will be constructed of concrete for lower maintenance and longer useful life before replacement. The design also acknowledges the "flash" nature of the Cass River and the ice flows that occur during the winter. Since the 1990s, the City has wanted to connect Heritage Park with Main Street. Thanks to federal funding secured by Congressman John Moolenar, the project will soon be a reality. The Heritage Park Riverwalk will join with its western side counterpart sometime in the next 18 months. This 1,020-foot extension will connect the Riverwalk to the Covered Bridge, continuing to the public boat dock just west of South Main Street/M-83 at River Place and the City's pedestrian bridge. This addition would match the flood control levee project on the western side of the Cass. Funding for this project is as follows: The City of Frankenmuth has committed $100,000; a local family foundation has committed a matching $100,000; and the Frankenmuth Noon Rotary Club has committed $15,000 for a total match of $215,000. The Riverwalk, finished in 1994, was funded by a grant from the State and the Rotary Club. It was updated in 2015 with more rest areas, benches, and wider pavement. The riverwalk's mission is to provide people with a smooth path for walkers, bicycles, strollers, inline skating, and all types of non-motorized vehicles. The walkway totals 0.9 miles, or 4752 ft. And now the Riverwalk is able to connect downtown commerce to the City's biggest park, giving the community an even closer connection to all the town has to offer!
