14 As we mark our 50th anniversary, we reflect on the journey that brought us here, celebrating the unwavering support of our residents, community partners, and the tireless dedication of those who have shaped our library into what it is today. It all began in 1971 when the Frankenmuth Women's Club, recognizing the need for a local library, took the initiative to form a study committee. Through the grassroots efforts, they garnered support from door-to-door fundraising. Their persistence paid off when in 1972, the City Counsel allocated funds for the establishment of our beloved library. A pivotal moment came on March 6th, 1973, when the Wickson-Link Memorial Foundation generously donated towards the construction of the library building. We opened our doors for the first time on June 24th, 1974, under the guidance of Librarian, Teresa Hansen. Since then, our library has seen six directors, each leaving an indelible mark on our institution. Mary McEwen, our Head Librarian for over two decades, fostered a culture of inclusivity and oversaw the expansion that included our Children's Wing and Mossner Study. Her dedication ensured the library evolved with the times by bringing in the first computers to our library. In 1997, during Dave Curtis's tenure, our community faced adversity when the tornado struck, causing substantial damage to the library. However, through resilience and community support, we rebuilt, and even added a second-floor addition that included our community room space. This space has allowed the library to be the community center it is today. The addition included our beautiful mural by Steve Hargash. Thanks to Wally Bronner we were able to obtain permissions to use the Hummel Figurines. Under Mary Chasseur's leadership, the library transitioned from a city library to a district library, expanding its reach and resources. Through her tenacity and vision, crucial community partnerships were formed. In 2013, the City of Frankenmuth gifted the library building to the newly formed Frankenmuth Wickson District Library. This paved the way for the library to become the heart of the community, offering diverse programs and services tailored to the needs of our residents. Pamela Williams transitioned from our beloved Children's Librarian to Library Director in 2018. Her leadership during this time ushered in a period of growth and innovation, expanding our programming and services. Amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pamela Williams ensured the library remained a beacon of support and connection, offering vital services in a safe environment. As the Director of our Library, it is with immense joy and gratitude that I extend a heartfelt invitation for you to join us in celebrating 50 years of shared stories, cherished memories, and enduring friendships. We are immensely grateful for the years of community support that, in the words of Mary Anne Ackerman, allow our small-town library to offer big city services. Everyone is invited to our community celebration on June 24th, 2024. Together, let us celebrate our past and embrace the boundless possibilities of the future, united in our shared love for literature, learning, and community. ankenmuth ckson District Library Celebrates 50 Years of Community and Connection By Michelle Duclos
