16 It can be frustrating helping a child learn to read, and sometimes you don't know how to assist them effectively. That's where Wickson can help. We have an entire section dedicated to helping children learn to read, whether it's a young reader or an older child struggling. Our new Wickson Literacy Hub, which we call the Wickson Lit Hub, is here to support you. Wickson is committed to being your partner in fostering a love of reading for everyone. The science of reading refers to a comprehensive body of research that delves into how children learn to read. This research emphasizes the importance of key components such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Together, these elements help children decode words, understand their meanings, and become proficient readers. For parents, understanding this means recognizing that effective reading instruction involves more than just memorizing words. It includes teaching children how sounds form words and how words convey meaning. While some children naturally pick up reading skills, many others require a systematic and explicit approach to develop into confident readers. Decodable books play a crucial role in this systematic approach. These books are specifically designed to align with phonics instruction. They use words that students can sound out based on the phonics rules they have been taught. This allows beginning and struggling readers to practice decoding skills in a controlled and supportive environment, building their confidence and fluency. We are thrilled to announce that the Frankenmuth Wickson District Library has received generous grants from the Nickless Foundation and the Wickson Link Foundation to create the Wickson Lit Hub, launching in August 2024. The Wickson Lit Hub is tailored to support both beginning readers and those who are struggling with reading, and offers a comprehensive collection of decodable and phonics books to help young readers practice their decoding skills step by step. It includes high-interest, low-reading-level (Hi-Lo) books, perfect for older kids who need extra practice with reading. Our diverse selection features books from various publishers, covering different levels, topics, and genres, including fiction, non-fiction, and graphic novels. Additionally, engaging phonics games are available to reinforce reading skills through play.
