Frankenmuth's Legacy in America As the United States celebrates 250 years of independence, we in Frankenmuth are proud to share our own story of 180 years—a journey of faith, community, and tradition that has been woven into the fabric of America for nearly two centuries. ThePioneering Spirit Our story began in 1845, when a group of German immigrants, led by a humble pastor, set out on a difficult journey across the sea. Seeking religious freedom, they established a mission colony in the Michigan wilderness and named it "Frankenmuth," meaning "Courage of the Franconians." With hard work and unwavering faith, these pioneers cleared the land, built a church, and laid the foundation for the thriving community you see today. Building a Legacy From those early beginnings, the town grew into a beacon of community and hospitality. Early family businesses, built on the values of hard work and serving others, included logging, farming, brewing, dining, wool processing, and building. The tradition of welcoming travelers blossomed into a way of life, and with the addition of Interstate 75, it helped earn Frankenmuth its reputation as "Michigan's Little Bavaria." A Living History Frankenmuth isn't just a place with a past—it's living, breathing history you can walk through. As you stroll down Main Street, you're following in the footsteps of those first settlers. The traditional Bavarian architecture, the stories in our hand-painted murals, and our famous family-style chicken dinners are all a part of this story. They serve as a constant reminder of the values that built this town, from its agricultural roots to its world-famous hospitality. Join Our Story This year, as we celebrate 180 years of our town's heritage and honor the USA's 250th birthday, we welcome you to become a part of our continuing story.
