"What do you want to do when you grow up?" Simple questions often lead to complicated answers. However, in the case of Sarah Richmond, she was able to spend her junior and senior year easily answering this query. Last year, Sarah attended Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center's one year Veterinary Science Program. Her classroom experiences enabled her to practice the expected skills of employees at a veterinary clinic. During the second semester, she was pleasantly surprised to be able to assist with cat and dog surgeries at the Bay County Animal Shelter. The BAISD Veterinary Science Program challenged Sarah to find a way to continue her learning experiences through a cooperative educational placement. Dr. Glen Darrow of Bavarian Veterinary Hospital offered her a position. Under his guidance, Sarah is able to observe surgeries, dental cleanings and routine exams. Her daily tasks include sterilizing instruments, cleaning exam rooms and preparing materials for office visits. Sarah emphasizes that both the BAISD opportunity and the placement in a veterinary office solidified her decision to pursue veterinary science as a career. Looking ahead, Sarah is excited to continue her passion in the veterinary field. She will be attending CMU's Pre-Veterinary program next fall. "I definitely understand that this is what I want to do after I leave Frankenmuth High School." Frankenmuth High School's Business program is proud to partner with numerous local businesses and employers to provide job opportunities through co-op and internship placements. These offerings allow students to work during their school day at a variety of locations, based on their occupational interests; co-op placements are typically paid and run one or two hours, while internships are not paid and are limited to one hour per day.
