As part of E.F. Rittmueller Middle School's Schools to Watch celebration, each student and staff member received a commemorative Schools to Watch t-shirt as a gift from the Frankenmuth Credit Union, Photo Courtesy of Rummel Studios EFR's theme this school year was "To Infinity and Beyond" with a focus on the word "Infinity" and knowing that our learning has no limits. Our students and staff had a successful year moving forward in challenging and engaging ways. As the 2018-2019 school year ends, here are just a few of the educational experiences that were memorable for staff and students this year: November brought us a new "staff" member when Frank, EFR's Therapy Dog, joined the team. Our students and staff have embraced Frank with great affection. His presence brings joy, calmness and reduced stress. Extensive research and planning was done before deciding to pursue getting a therapy dog. The benefits to students we have already witnessed include promoting greater self-esteem, reducing anxiety and providing calming therapy for special needs students. After seven months, our students and staff will attest to this even more. It is difficult to say the name "Frank" without bringing a smile to a room at EFR. He is a great addition to our staff! Three local businesses play a key role to making Frank possible: Frankenmuth Insurance for funding Frank and his extensive training; Dr. Darrow at Bavarian Veterinary Clinic for providing services at a reduced cost; Jack and Charlie's Pet Supply for donating mats, water dishes, leashes and monthly dog washes. If you are interested in providing items for Frank when he is on the job, Jack and Charlies offers "The Frank Card" which is a 15% off coupon that can be picked up at EFR and used toward any purchases of items for Frank. We also thank the Eric and Laura Jacob Family for providing a loving home for Frank when he is not at work. January brought us an exciting addition to the STEM classroom. Mrs. Hecht, EFR Principal, won a 3D printer through a contest sponsored by MEEMIC Insurance. Staff has been as engaged as the students have been to experience and use the new printer. It provides a new way to think dimensionally. Kyle Fall, an EFR 8th grader along with STEM teacher, Mrs. Werner, created a 3D model of the Great Pyramid of Egypt. When the model is split in half it gives an amazing visual of where and how the interior chambers were accessed. EFR Social Studies teacher, Mr. Reimus, is excited to have this model for his seventh grade social studies classes. This new tool will help take our teaching and learning to the next level. Special thanks to MEEMIC Insurance for providing grant opportunities to educators and to the Frankenmuth Credit Union for providing additional supplies for the 3D printer. March brought us exciting news as E.F. Rittmueller Middle School was named one of fifteen middle schools in Michigan designated as a School to Watch. Schools to Watch is a recognition program for middle level schools developed by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. Following a lengthy application process and site visit, EFR was selected for its academic excellence, responsiveness to the needs and interests of young adolescents and its commitment to helping all students achieve at high levels. On May 14, EFR held a Schools to Watch celebration featuring a guest speaker, Medal of Honor recipient Specialist Five James McCloughan. EFR was then awarded a banner by Dr. Krajenta who is the Schools to Watch State Director. Several community members were present for the celebration. In June, representatives from EFR will receive their award at the National Forum's Annual Conference in Washington DC. EFR Principal, Kristen Hecht, stated, "The Schools to Watch process was intensive, but one that helped us take a better look at our school systems, strengths, and areas for improvement. It also allowed us to showcase our amazing students and the fantastic work the teachers do with the young adolescent every day." The 2018-2019 school year was one we will remember for years to come. The EFR Staff looks forward to the 2019-2020 school year as we continue to take our learning "To Infinity and Beyond." To Infinity and Beyond H i , I ' m F r a n k ! 20
