Dixie Highway Improvements and Detours Although not in Frankenmuth, many of you may be impacted by much needed road improvements this summer. Dixie Highway from I-75 through Airport Road is scheduled for joint repairs, milling and resurfacing this summer. The Saginaw County Road Commission has worked for the past several years in partnership with Bridgeport Charter Township, the Bridgeport Downtown Development Authority, local elected officials, Saginaw Future, the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce and the East Michigan Council of Governments to pursue state and federal funding. Lois Kay Contracting was the low bidder for $1,357,875. Construction will begin mid-June, and should be completed by August 26, 2019, depending on weather conditions. Work will begin on the outside lanes, with one lane of traffic being maintained on the inside lanes. There will also be a two-week closure to construct the Airport Road intersection. During this closure, the detour route will use Dixie Highway, Portsmouth Road and Roedel Road. Once complete, work will begin on the inside lanes with traffic shifted to the outside lanes. This is phase one of the project. Work on the second phase of this project, which will improve Dixie Highway from Airport Road to Junction Road, is currently in design for 2020 construction. Notes from the City Frankenmuth is a wonderful place to live and work. Take note of the following alerts, programs and updates from the City of Frankenmuth. Proposal 3 Changes the Rules for Voting Known as "Promote the Vote," Proposal 3 passed by Michigan voters in November of 2018. The special election scheduled on August 6th will be the first time that Frankenmuth area voters will see implementation of the law. The ballot measure changed the state's election law by expanding voter registration and making it easier to vote absentee. To register to vote, you need to be all of the following: • A US Citizen • At least 18 years old by election day • A resident of Michigan • A resident of the City or Township where you are applying to vote Michigan residents can register to vote at Secretary of State offices, municipal clerks' offices, online, by mail, at registration drives and/or military recruitment centers up to 15 days before an election — by July 22, 2019 in this case. Between July 23 and Election Day, people can still register at their city or township clerk's offices. Those offices will be open for extended hours the weekend before the election. People who register past the 14-day deadline must bring a proof of residency, such as a driver's license, government- issued identification card, utility bill, bank statement or paycheck that shows their address. Voters who register on Election Day can either vote absentee from the clerk's office or take a receipt verifying their registration to their polling place. No Reason Absentee Voting In addition to changing voter registration standards, access to absentee voting was also expanded. Voters once had to have to have a reason to request an absentee ballot. Now, anyone can vote absentee. Residents still must request an absentee ballot. You can do so by: • Downloading an application for an absentee voter ballot at the State's website, Michigan.gov/elections. You can also receive an application from the Clerk in the community in which you're registered to vote. • You must mail or deliver the application to your Clerk by 4pm on August 5th. • You have until 8pm on Election Day to complete the ballot and return it to the clerk's office. 4
