Rules of the Flame Recreational Fires and Burn Permits With temperatures rising and outdoor activities increasing, it's good to be informed about Frankenmuth's rules and guidelines for burning and recreational fires. Outside, wood recreational fires or campfires are only allowed in the City on licensed campgrounds, such as the Churchgrove and Jellystone campgrounds. Liquid petroleum or natural gas units are permitted. Users must follow manufacturer's recommendations on the installation and location of such units as well as keeping the unit away from flammable structures and items, having constant adult supervision, and having a fire extinguisher or other control method available. "Outdoor" or "open" burning (usually intended for disposal of waste wood or brush, where products of combustion are emitted directly into the ambient air) are prohibited in the City of Frankenmuth, and are also prohibited within 1400 feet of the City limits by State law. Township Outdoor Burning Rules Campfires are allowed in the township, and outdoor or open burning of brush only is allowed, but requires a permit. Those permits are applicable for three consecutive days, as long as the burning stays within the agreed-upon parameters. Any burning must be at least 50 feet away from any structure or combustible materials. There is no burning after dark, and no burning when wind speeds exceed 10 mph. There must be a garden hose or other approved fire extinguishing available on-site, and any burning must be constantly attended by a person at least 18 years of age. For both the City and the Township, the fire department is authorized to require that burning be discontinued at any time. It's never a good idea to burn in dry and/ or windy conditions.
