pproximately ninety eighth grade students at E.F. Rittmueller Middle School recently participated in an annual class trip to Washington, DC. To start our trip, we boarded two coach buses with several of our teachers and numerous parent chaperones on a Tuesday evening in Frankenmuth. We traveled overnight for twelve hours and arrived at our destination early Wednesday morning. After a quick breakfast and a change of clothes, our class immediately set off to explore our Nation's Capitol for three straight days on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday! During our visit, we were able to see important historical sites such as Ford's Theatre, which was where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, and Mt. Vernon, which was the home of George Washington. We explored the National Archives where we came face to face with the most significant documents in our country's history such as the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights. We also saw the White House and toured several beautiful monuments and memorials such as the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials and the Vietnam, Korean War and World War II Memorials. We visited Arlington National Cemetery, the Library of Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court and we received a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol Building. On the last day of our trip, we had several hours to spend in our individual chaperone groups to explore the Smithsonian Museums. Our group got to see Abraham Lincoln's top hat, Dorothy's ruby red slippers, and the actual flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star Spangled Banner. When the trip was over and we arrived back in Frankenmuth on Saturday morning, we were all very exhausted! Our class trip to Washington, DC was incredible. It was amazing to be so close to the history that we had previously only read and seen movies about. We shared laughs and made great memories with our classmates, and we made sure to take a lot of photos so that we can look back years from now and remember the fun times that we had in Washington, DC!
