The value of the 2020 improvements is approximately $3.8 million. Approximately $3.0 million of that will be from the bond fund and the remaining $800,000 will come from the sinking fund. The school district has worked closely with City officials in planning all of our outdoor projects, so current youth athletic programs and other civic activities will be able to be accommodated by the new facilities. "For example, the turf fields are being constructed to accommodate multi-sports and other programs, from the youngest age ball teams to the band," explained Phil Martin. The additional parking will also be a bonus for summer concerts in the park and those nights when we have multiple events between List and Rittmueller. Scheduling and operations Work on the new parking lot project and some of the paths will begin in April and May with the rest of the work to follow shortly thereafter. The turf fields and outdoor amenity construction will begin as soon as the soccer and track teams have completed their home schedule for the season. The parking lot resurfacing and the interior high school and middle school work will commence as soon school is done on June 12th. Martin reports that the turf fields and remainder of the improvements are scheduled to be completed by the mid to end of August. "Even though school is not in session, our campus still has a fair amount of activity in the Summer. All of the construction will make for some extra congestion. We'll work closely with our contractors to minimize disruption of our normal activities such as Eagle Express daycare." In spite of snow, Phil Martin, Kristen Hecht, and Kevin Schwedler look ahead to Summer 2020 plans. Frankenmuth School District representatives collaborate with the City of Frankenmuth officials. Planning for Turf Fields The 2020 Frankenmuth School District Capital Improvements will bring the first artificial turf fields to the Frankenmuth athletic program. The district has carefully planned for these new facilities during the past year, and they are projects that have been on our long range plan since 2001. The process began with the District decision to use a design-build firm that specializes in athletic turf fields. Phil Martin explained, "We began with a qualifications-based selection process, putting out an RFQ, then narrowing to three firms, completing the process with those three companies interviewing with our committee. The committee of eight people from the School District, our design professionals, and a member of the community at large weighed all of the information involved, from their qualifications, to product, playability, to price. I think all of us learned a great deal about these products and the industry in general during the process." Members of the group visited several different football and soccer turf fields all across Michigan. These included, "Lake Fenton, Northwood University, Cedar Springs, Kettering University's Atwood Stadium in Flint, and also contacted the Detroit Lions about their field." Some of our key factors in evaluating turf fields were player safety, durability, and cost. When looking at safety the big discussion is always impact and abrasion. Or simply how much cushion does the field have and how much does it play like a natural surface. Our soccer program was also very interested in how the ball rolls on the surface – you know playability for all sports is a bit different. Martin explained The district ultimately selected FieldTurf out of Atlanta, Georgia. They will install a product known as Core for the football field and a different product called Revolution for the soccer field. "Core is the same product that the New England Patriots installed – it is a heartier blade to stand up to the increased pounding and one area play of football. Revolution is the same product installed at Atwood Stadium – which plays more like a natural grass field in terms of bounce and roll for soccer." High School Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Improvements The oldest HVAC unit in the district, serving the High School Cafeteria area will be replaced. Rittmueller Middle School The restrooms in the 7th/8th grade hallway will be renovated and updated with new fixtures. Acoustical panels will be added in the gymnasium. 13
