Learning is Fun & Games Learning is Fun & Games The Frankenmuth School District is fortunate to serve families and students from many diverse backgrounds. Each family and student contributes to the richness of our school culture which our students get to experience. Typically, English Language Learners (ELLs) speak a primary language other than English in their home such as Tamil, Chinese, Spanish, Cantonese, and Hmong to name just a few of the hundreds of other languages spoken in homes. Our district has over a dozen different languages represented! Like many staff members at the Frankenmuth School District, teacher Julie Leach wears several hats. Working with our ELL students, Mrs. Leach ensures that students are successful academically in their classroom, and also provides support as they practice language. Ironically, Mrs. Leach has found that her students make tremendous growth by playing games. "Research supports the use of games as one of the most effective teaching strategies for our students." By offering games, manipulatives, and problem solving activities differentiated to language levels, she can encourage social skills, collaboration, and meaningful language development while meeting their curriculum goals. And the best part... it is fun for the students. This Spring, she continued to hold her classes online. She acknowledged that teaching the games took a bit more time, but her students successfully navigated new rules to learn how to play and laugh across a computer screen. The coexistence of people from diverse cultures, languages, and social circumstances is a true blessing to the Frankenmuth School District. "One of my responsibilities as an English Language Teacher is to become aware of each student's personal story and the histories and cultures their families represent to create a foundation for meaningful connections and curricular advancements with my students."
