14 14 Engaging the Five Senses: A Journey Through Story Time at Frankenmuth Wickson District Library By Beth Emmons - Early Learning Specialist at Frankenmuth Wickson District Library Story Times at Wickson Library are more than just reading books; they are a sensory adventure that captivates the young minds of children and goes beyond with sessions for adults with special needs and monthly Destination Story Time trips. These sessions take library-goers on a multisensory journey, engaging all five senses in the most delightful and educational way. The library's Destination Story Time, held once a month, takes families on exciting trips to local places within the community. This initiative not only fosters a sense of community but also introduces children to various settings, expanding their horizons. These outings may include trips to local venues such as farms, stores, or health offices. Our community is so welcoming, and many have reached out to be a host for these special events. On weeks we offer all 6 Story Times, we average an attendance of around 150 patrons! It's clear that the Story Time sessions at Frankenmuth Wickson District Library are a hit among the community. They offer an innovative and holistic approach to literacy education while fostering a love for reading and a sense of feeling at home at the library, that will last a lifetime. I adore what I do here at the library and I'm so happy to be able to share my expertise and love for literacy with our patrons. If you haven't had a chance yet to come experience one of our story times, I encourage you to stop by and see for yourself. I can't wait to read with you! SEE During Story Time, children are immersed in a visual wonderland. I select beautifully illustrated books, engaging young readers with vibrant colors, intricate details, and captivating characters. Our library's cozy setting, complete with age-appropriate seating, ensures that every child can see the pictures and watch the story unfold. This visual stimulation sparks their imagination and keeps them eager for more. HEAR As I guide the children through a story, my voice adds an auditory dimension to the experience. I capture the kids' attention with voices, tone, and gestures. It is so very important to read aloud at every age. We also sing lots of songs, everything from familiar melodies, to 'get up and boogie' tunes. Music plays a huge role in child development including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. TOUCH TOUCH Story Time is not just about listening and looking; it's also about interacting. The library provides tactile elements like plush toys, textured props, and soft rugs, encouraging children to touch and explore. These sensory experiences allow kids to engage with the story on a deeper level and develop their fine motor skills. After the story I provide multiple sensory activities including crafts, a sensory table, fine motor skill activities, and more. TASTE TASTE While taste might not be the most obvious sense associated with a library event, the Wickson Library ensures that it is incorporated in a fun and educational way. During special themed Story Time sessions, I offer a taste of a snack related to the story's theme. This year we are focusing on the rainbow, so our snacks correspond to the color we are learning for the week. This adds an exciting dimension to the experience, making reading even more enjoyable. SMELL SMELL The sense of smell can evoke powerful memories, and the library takes advantage of this by incorporating scents that match the stories. Whether it's a Story Time about apples where children can smell their cinnamon apple snack cooking in a crockpot or a session about a garden where they can experience the scent of flowers, these elements add depth to the storytelling experience.
